“I find going to bed and pulling my imagination over my head often means waking up to a solution to a design problem. That state of limbo, the time between sleeping and waking, seems to allow ideas to somehow outflank the sentinels of common sense. That’s when they can float to the surface. I find ideas often show up in the showers, or while I’m contemplating marmalade and toast and breakfast.”

– Alan Fletcher

Carlos Lerma is an incredibly talented illustrator and designer. He has over ten years of experience in the field and he is trying to amaze us, one day at a time. Based in Cancun, Mexico, Carlos is bringing us joy with his colorful illustrations – whether they are renditions of Hell Boy, The Gremlins, Batman, or even Doctor Hannibal Lecter, he is doing a terrific job.

You can follow more of his work on his personal website, his studio collaboration project, or on his Facebook and Tumbrl pages. He even has a Twitter feed set up so you can follow his tweets. But enough with the chit-chat, let’s get started.

1. Hellboy

Hellboy was created by writer Mike Mignola, and first appeared in the San Diego Comic-Con Comics, issue #2, on August 2nd 1993. It tells the story of a baby demon being found during WW II by allied forces. This baby demon was brought to our world by Nazioccultists that were trying to make him a puppet of evil.

His birth date is December 23rd 1944. Fortunately he was liberated by the good guys, and was taken into custody by professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who later founded the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, or short BPRD. He was raised as a normal boy and, even though he has horns, a tail, is all red, and everything says “ I am going to bring the apocalypse”, he is the bastion of human salvation.

Mike’s story has garnered a strong fan base, and in 2004 a movie appeared with Ron Perlman staring as Hellboy. Later, in 2008 a sequel also surfaced, but it barely made any profit. In July 2014, Guillermo Del Torro, the man responsible for bringing Hellboy to the big screens, has made his wishes perfectly clear on trying to make another Hellboy movie, but he is being blocked by studios that don’t see it as profitable – despite having such a strong fan base, and the DVD, Blu-ray releases sold tremendously well.

2. Breaking Bad

“Breaking Bad” is a hit TV series created by Vince Gilligan. It is a sad story of how an empire of drugs is being created by a man’s necessity of escaping his illness. Walter White, a brilliant chemistry teacher, is diagnosed with stage III cancer, and is given only two years to live. With a baby on the way, Walter sets on assuring his family’s future by manufacturing meth in his RV.

He founds a former student of his, Jesse Pinkman, that is able to work with, and sell the drugs on the market. Of course, trying to break into the drug market in New Mexico is just plain stupid, and will only bring the cartels to your doorstep – holding a huge axe and a desire to scrape you off the planet. Brian Cranston, who plays the leading role does an terrific job and has become one of my favorite actors – despite playing in Godzilla which was a terrible failure.

3. Marvel’s The Avengers

Stan Lee’s “The Avengers” is a comic book, consisting of the most powerful, and famous super hero group of all time. The comic book first appeared in 1963, and has since garnered a humongous fan base of all ages. In 2012 the movie came out, directed by Joss Whedon, and it broke a ton of records, including the biggest opening debut in North America – grossing over $207 million.

It was well received also, and it is considered one of the most fun, and entertaining super hero movie of all times. What’s not to love? You got Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk battling villains. The sequel, titled “ Avengers: Age of Ultron” is set to appear on May 1st, 2015.

4. The Gremlins

I really do appreciate Carlos’ talent, and this is one incredibly cool piece of art, but I hate “The Gremlins” with a passion. The idea is just plain stupid. Don’t feed them after midnight, don’t get them wet, or have any water involved, and don’t expose them to bright light. Well, let’s start with how they are supposed to be fed.

Do you know what the time is now? After midnight. Do you know what the time is every time? After midnight. How do you expect do feed those wonderful little creatures? Okay, let’s get passed this and say that during daytime we could feed them, and it was just a misunderstanding. What are they supposed to drink? Nothing? Do you expect them to NOT die of dehydration?

I can understand not getting them involved with water, as in, not showering them, but come on, this is just plain wrong. Not exposing them to bright light seems the only reasonable condition. Anyway, I don’t understand why you would want to buy a pet with such a high maintenance factor. I will stick with cute little puppies thank you very much.

5. Hannibal Lecter

No, it doesn’t look anything like Anthony Hopkins, and it shouldn’t. Why? you may be asking. Well, because it is Mads Mikkelsen portraying him in the new critically acclaimed TV series. Brought to us by director Bryan Fuller, the guy who also directed the first season of “Heroes”, “Pushing Daisies”, and “Dead Like Me”, “Hannibal” is just incredibly jaw dropping.

I can’t even describe how good it is, the music, the scenes, the acting, the story – everything is just how it should be. I highly recommend you taking a few hours off of your busy schedule and watch it. I think it is also available on Netflix.
