You have to be a pretty heartless individual not to enjoy a good GIF now and again. I personally think that there is something kind of magical about them, as they are not quite static photos, but neither are they what one would call a video.
The GIF first appeared nearly thirty years ago, in 1987. They were introduced by CompuServ as a way to provide a color image format for their file downloading areas. It replaced their initial RLE format, which only supported black and white. Using LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) data compression, GIF quickly became popular, as the other run length encoding formats at the time, such as PCX and MacPaint, were far less efficient.
The original version of the GIF format was called 87a, with a later version released in 1989 called 89a. It is this later version that added support for animation delays, and created the GIF we know and love today.
GIFs can be a fun little addition to any website’s design, and even if that is not the case, it is always fun to take a little brake and make your own funny little animations.
