The Softer Side of Pit Bulls

The Softer Side of Pit Bulls

“Orient your UI around the job to be done – around the problem – and not the person. Then people who have that problem can fall in love with your product because it makes the problem go away, whether they are the first in line or the last person to hear about it.”

– Ryan Singer

Sophie Gamand is the one behind these beautiful pictures depicting how soft and cute Pit Bulls are. They have been portrayed in movies as vicious creatures that only seek blood and violence, because of this they are the champions in dog fights. This can’t be more wrong. They are dogs like any others. We have to stop this trend getting anymore popular. Sophie Gamand is a French photographer that is currently working in New York City – her main work focus is the relationship between dogs and humans; and she has the goal of bringing justice to these wonderful little friends of ours.

With her new project “Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution” – “I realized pit bulls were always portrayed in very urban, gritty photographs. The imagery associated with these dogs is often harsh, very contrasted, conveying the idea of them being tough. In my opinion, this feeds the myth that these dogs are dormant psychopaths. So I decided to take the other route and portray them like hippies, soft fairy-tale-inspired characters, feminine and dreamy. The idea of Flower Power blossomed.”.

You can see more of Sophie’s work on her own personal website, Instagram, Facebook, or you can buy her prints right here. But enough with the chit-chat, let’s see for ourselves how they really are.

1. Cali

Cali is a Sean Casey rescue. Tell me, does this picture inspire you to run away? To fear for your life? They are not dormant psychopaths, they are just dogs, and they have traits as other dogs have. “I wished to portray this misunderstood group in a different light. The general public and news media consider a “pit bull” a dog that belongs to one of the following breeds, or simply looks like one: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bull Terrier, or any mix.

To put it in a nutshell, most “Pit bulls” are judged based on certain physical characteristics. Moreover, if they physically look like they belong to that group, they will be deemed dangerous by many, with no regard to their individual temperament. “I find Cali to be one of the most heartwarming dogs that I have ever gazed my eyes upon. I would pet her ’till we both fall asleep on the couch watching re-runs of Laurel and Hardy.

2. Europa

You can clearly see it in her eyes, the pain and suffering she has been through. Europa is an American Haven rescue. Even though she has seen the terrible acts of humans on her, she is trying to recover and find an owner to love. She was brought to the shelter with 9 puppies, and only 1 has remained unadopted yet! “An estimated 1,000,000 pit bulls are euthanized each year in America’s shelters. Victims of prejudices, uneducated laws and urban tales that associate them with ultra violence, they are probably the most misunderstood dogs.

Pit bulls, like any terrier dogs, are strong and powerful animals. There is no denying that. But power dose not necessarily mean violence. Most pit bulls are peaceful and sweet love bugs. Their power is in their snuggles and unconditional love. For this series, I imagined them like hippies, fighting the system and the image they are given with the power of love and the softness of flowers. “

3. JellyBean

I could eat her all up! Look at how cute she is! JellyBean is a Sean Casey rescue. While I was growing up, and spending time at the country side, my neighbor had a similar pup, his name was Attila. I would spend countless hours with Attila and my dog, Napoleon, just playing, chasing each other and doing all sorts of goofy stuff. He never hurt me, or anyone else for that matter.

He just loved to be pet, and treated with all sorts of grain cookies. Yup, I couldn’t believe it also – he absolutely adored grain cookies. It was the first dog, and the only dog, that ate them. He will forever be in my heart along side Napoleon, as my two childhood best friends, that helped me realize how wonderful life can truly be.

4. Minnie

How could you possibly be afraid of pit bulls? Just take a moment and look at them. They are in need of a loving hand to help them recuperate after being traumatized by our fellow people. Minnie is a Sean Casey rescue. If you are planning on getting a new pup, or adopting one, I urge you to take a look at these rescues. Minnie is a 2 year old Terrier, American Pit Bull/Mix.

The guys over at the animal rescue center have this to say about Minnie – “This Pocket Pibble is very nervous and reserved when she first meets people. Once you spend time with Minnie she opens up to become a total love bug. Minnie is very attached to our staff, and with time she will love you just as much!

Minnie would be best suited in a quiet home without other animals and with someone who is experienced with nervous dogs. Minnie is spayed, dewormed, treated to prevent fleas and ticks and is up to date with vaccinations”. So what are you waiting for? Go to their website and take Minnie home.

Spread the love so we can build a world where we all co-exist in peace. If you have a story about an adorable pup please feel freely to post in the comments section below. Or maybe you wish to tell us your opinions about how pit bulls should be treated. We would love to hear from you!
