Today I will show you a simple  effect in Photoshop that will result in a great background. You will need a good quality photo with good colors and of course a version of Photoshop.

I will be  using this photo that I’ve shot in my last trip. I like this picture because it has a lot of blues  and an ok contrast.

Now go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur and apply  these settings.

And tadaaaam…you have your background.

And you can always play around with some adjustment layer to change the colors or the contrast.

  1. I’ve seen a similar technique over at Tutorial9 using Gausian Blur but thanks to your article I’m inspired to try out different Blur methods. Thank you.

  2. Top tips:
    – Repeat blurring if you’re not happy with the result.
    – Apply the filter Sharpen -> Unsharp Mask with high settings to get more of a ‘bang’ from the picture.

  3. Dude, you are not serious with this! This is soooo cool and it's given me such amazing backgrounds that one would think it took hours of work to compile!

  4. Great post which give me some impressions how I can amend my script. The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.
