“For every new feature we add, we take an old one out. A lot of big sites don’t do that, and it’s a problem. Twitter started as a beautifully simple product, but it’s now going the same route as Facebook. The drive to innovate can over encumber and destroy a product.”

– David Karp

You need to stop relying on someone else. If you think you can do it, and do it well, don’t  fret when someone else is going to criticize your work. Every great person in this world has been put in front of people that criticized them, told them that they won’t even achieve mediocrity, but they didn’t care, they remained independent – they stick with their goals, even if it meant that they would fail countless times before they would feel accomplished.

Van Gogh was never acknowledge until he was in his mid 30’s, but he never lost hope that what he was doing was unique – he poured his life and soul into every work, he didn’t had time to listen to others complaining about him and his “trivial” work, because if he did, he would of get sucked into their vision of what his art should be all about, and his vision would be lost into times cruel hands. Stick to your gut, to how you choose to see things, even if you fail at it – don’t lose hope!

2. Keep thinking

Keep thinking about everything. Don’t believe everything, think for yourself, see how it’s made, how someone got to that conclusion, think about that book you just read – what did the author really mean? was it about depression, anxiety and the dizziness of freedom, or it was just about a confused mind trying to figure out the world?

By letting yourself time to think you can asses on what to prioritize in your life, and you will find yourself getting to know you. But don’t just stop here; try to think out of the box, even if it goes into the surreal, stupid, awkward, weird spectrum – then rationalize what seems more likely to be, or simply impossible to conceive. How do you expect to thrive, and grow not only as a creative professional, but as a human being?

3. Seek out new experiences

Don’t be that guy/girl that says no immediately to something out of their comfort zone. You will never know what will become your new passion. Maybe playing the cello will actually make you more fulfilled in life. What about trying to paint something? Well, don’t worry if you suck, we all suck at the beginning.

Don’t worry if you suck, we all do when we start something new – don’t put the pressure on yourself on being a child prodigy, it will only end with you suffering from not being able to overachieve. Fail, fail all the time, and don’t be afraid to do so. How are you supposed to learn? Seeking out new experiences may also inspire you in your current, on going projects. You have this whole new thing in front of you that you can apply to what you already do – that’s an opportunity that you simply cannot miss.

4. Stay persistent

Stay persistent, and don’t give up. You have your vision, you know how the big picture is supposed to complete itself – listening to somebody else criticizing your work can provide good feedback, but it is really the feedback that you are intending to listen to? As I said before, you are the only one that sees the true vision of your project.

Don’t despair if your work isn’t acknowledge by your peers, or who do you consider on being your main pillar of stability doesn’t approve with what you do. It only matters that you think it’s great, and it only matters if you stay persistent with your work. Be careful, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to try new ideas – it is most crucial to see it from every perspective possible, and choose the one that it feels most natural to you.

5. Take some alone-time

The best way to achieve your goals is to take some breaks once in a while. Working without taking any breaks can suck all that creativity juice from you, and really soon you will get frustrated that you can’t work anymore. You know what you can do with all the alone time? Enjoy life to the utmost fullest. It’s the perfect time to stop worrying and see what makes you truly happy in life and profit from that – “Creativity is more than just being different.

Anybody can plan weird; that’s easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity” stated Charles Mingus. And Steve Jobs said – “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, the just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while”. If you see, there is a relation between great minds and their thinking of creativity.
