30 FIFA World Cup 2014 Wallpapers

“The World Cup experience is more than just the game of football. It’s an event. And it will fly by faster than you think. It will end and you’ll be saying, ‘Wow, it’s over already?’ You have to remember to take it all in and enjoy it.” – Cobi Jones
The FIFA World Cup (or just the World Cup, as it is colloquially known) is the biggest event in football, and one of the biggest events in sports, in general. Second only to the Olympics, in prestige, the World Cup brings together national teams from across the globe, and pits them together in what many consider to be the finest spectacle of football possible.
The first ever international game was played in 1872 in Glasgow, between Scotland and England. It wasn’t until 1930, that the first ever FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay. The host team won the game, and it is an event that Uruguayans still talk about fondly. This says a lot about how important the competition is to people, and how invested both the fans, and the teams are in winning the sought-after cup.
FIFA was founded in 1904, and have had several attempts of creating a world tournament before the one in Uruguay. Their first attempt came in 1906. Switzerland was the host, but due to these being the early days of football, FIFA’s official history regards the tournament as a failure.
The current 32-team model was implemented fairly recently, in 1998, at the World Cup in France, allowing more teams from Africa, Asia and North America to take part in the competitions. The results of this change were soon visible, as teams like Ghana, Senegal and the USA started reaching legs of the tournament traditionally “reserved” for teams from South America and Europe.
To further encourage diversity, there are talks of expanding the 32-team system to 40, Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s current president, stating in 2013:
“From a purely sporting perspective, I would like to see globalisation finally taken seriously, and the African and Asian national associations accorded the status they deserve at the FIFA World Cup. It cannot be that the European and South American confederations lay claim to the majority of the berths at the World Cup.”

The competition is in Brazil, so it is safe to assume that you are going to be seeing a lot of wallpapers that are referencing the country’s flag. There are a lot of kitsch wallpapers out there, but we do not think that applies here. Great color, great texture, great taste.

A simple wallpaper, depicting the actual cup the winners get. The patterned background is really what makes it background, as opposed to just a picture. It is available in various resolutions.

This wallpaper depicts Fuelco, Brazil 2014’s official mascot, who is a three-banded armadillo, a Brazilian native species of armadillo. His name is a blending of the words futebol (football) and ecologia (ecology), as the three banded armadillo is a vulnerable species.
